A Comparative Study on The Counseling Self-Efficacy and Empathy of Psychiatric Nurses and General ward Nurses

Abstract
Purpose: This study compare counseling selfefficacy and empathy between psychiatric nurses and general ward nurses and to examine correlations between two variables.

Methods: Subjects were 257 nurses125 psychiatric nurses and 132 nurses working on general wards in Seoul and Busan province. Data collected from April 25 to May 24, 2011. To analyze data, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson¡¯s correlation used.

Results: ounseling self-efficacy and empathy in psychiatric nurses higher than general ward nurses. There a significant difference on counseling self-efficacy and empathy between psychiatric nurses who received communication skills and those not. There a significant difference counseling self-efficacy and empathy between general ward nurses who were married, had longer clinical experiences and received communication skills andthosenot. Also, counseling self-efficacy significantly and positively correlated with empathy.

Conclusion: These results indicate that need to develop communication skills training and education programs to provide their counseling self-efficacy and empathy.
